On today’s show, we had a woman who refers to herself as the Penguin Lady, and a man who calls himself the Snake Man.
First, we spoke with Dyan DeNapoli for 2 segments, about her book, The Great Penguin Rescue. It is a first hand account of the largest rescue of wild animals ever, which involved transporting 20,000 penguins away from an oil spill off South Africa, as well as rescuing and de-oiling of another 20,000 birds. Certainly its an exciting and inspiring tale. However, please note what she says near the end of the interview. Wild populations of penguins are falling, which she attributes to overfishing and the warming environment. Here is her website.
The Sanke Man, Matt Ellerbeck, joined us next to explain what he is doing to promote snake conservation. Matt strongly opposes the practice of having snakes as pets, as he has seen first hand how frequently the best intentions of the reptile “hobbyist” goes bad. Matt updates his facebook page regularly with journal –like entries. And here is his website.
And great news item with Peter.
