On this show, Dr. Karen Davis, Founder and President of United Poultry Concerns joined Lori to discuss two of their campaigns. The Yom Kippur ritual, Kaparos, practiced by some orthodox Jews, involves spinning live chickens around one’s head prior to killing it. Karen discussed the End Chickens as Kaparos Campaign. Lori and Karen then talked about fires in commercial animal housing facilities, and what is being done (and not done) to prevent them.
Then, Dr Dick Green from the ASPCA visited and discussed animal rescue efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi related to flooding from Hurricane Isaac.
And, Peter had some hot news items.
For more reading about Kaparos, Here is an article by Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz from The New York Jewish Week. He writes:
The primary purpose of the Yamim Noraim (High Holidays) is to connect more deeply with G-d and to improve ourselves. Taking on a cruel practice and harming an innocent creature has no place in Jewish life. Tsa’ar ba’alei chaim (the prohibition of harming animals) is a Torah prohibition that requires that we cultivate virtue and that we prevent suffering.
