On this show, two wonderful guests joined Lori. First on was Laura Bevan, Southern Regional Director of the Humane Society of the United States. Recently a few bear attacks have occurred in Florida, and even though it is clear the bears were attracted to improperly managed trash, hunting groups have advanced proposals to reopen bear hunting in response. Laura described the history of the Florida bear-hunting ban that is now in place, why these bear attacks should have never occurred, and why permitting hunting is not a good solution. The decision to allow the hunting of bears again rests with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
The second guest was Rene Ruston, Co-Founder of START Rescue, a California non-profit that specializes in transporting dogs from high kill shelters in Southern California to shelters, rescues and humane societies in the Pacific Northwest. In just a few short years, START (Shelter Transport Animals Rescue Team) has transported more than 6100 dogs, saving their lives and inspiring all animal rescuers. Rene told us about the history and growth of START and gave guidelines and tips for people who want to develop their own transport programs.
