The show begins with Lori’s impassioned discussion about the fatal mauling of zookeeper Stacey Konwiser at the Palm Beach Zoo, by a Malayan tiger. This tiger was part of a breeding program purported to help prevent the extinction of the species, and the woman who tragically perished was known as a tiger whisperer. Lori explains why this death never should have happened because wild animals belong in the wild.
The show continues with Peter visiting with Charlie Richter, US Director of APOPO, an international organization that trains African giant rats to detect land mines. They have programs in the developing world, and the rats operate quickly and cheaply to clear mines from large areas.
We continue news items including one about the ancient hunting society, the Order of St. Hubertus. It was hosting Justice Scalia when he died.
It’s “kitten season” and the show concludes with an enlightening talk about the reproductive cycles of free-roaming cats. Lori welcomes David Kirk and Leigh Kirk, founders of Forever Meow cat rescue, and they explain what you should do if you encounter a litter of young cats without their mother. Make sure to listen in so you know the do’s and don’ts surrounding these situations.
