Lori Welcomed two great guests on this show. First, Dr. Gregory Berns, a neuroscientist from Emory University, discussed his research into the brains of dogs. Using functional MRI on awake, cooperative, unrestrained dogs, Berns and his team are exploring how dogs think. What does it take to get a dog to stay still for a scan, and what exactly can we learn for canine MRIs? Dr. Berns answered these questions and many more about this new and exciting field. His book
is titled How Dogs Love Us – A neuroscientist and his adopted dog decode the canine brain.
Then, Los Angeles city Councilmember Paul Koretz appeared to give us an insider’s perspective on the city’s recent passing of a ban on the use of bull hooks for elephant training and performances. Koretz drafted the ordinance and guided its unanimous passage through the Council. But what will it really do for elephants? His answer may surprise you.
Plus, people are dying in record numbers from untreatable infections. We discussed how factory farming is contributing to the end of the golden age of antibiotics in our weekly news round up.
