The connection between dog breeding and dog euthanasia
We begin with Lori speaking to Elizabeth Oreck, National Manager of Puppy Mill Initiatives for Best Friends Animal Society about the connection between intentional dog breeding, overpopulation and euthanasia of homeless dogs.
For years, Lori has been explaining how dog breeders contribute to shelter crowding and consequently to the killing of far too many adoptable dogs. Listen in to hear Elizabeth’s perspective, as well as her opinions about the American Kennel Club.
any people don’t realize that when they buy a dog from a pet store or on the Internet, that dog most likely came from a puppy mill, a “factory farm” for dogs. In puppy mills, dogs live in small cages, often in the minimum legal size allowed (only six inches larger than the dog on all sides) and female dogs are bred as frequently as possible.
Life in a puppy mill is no life for our best friends. Even though more and more Americans are taking a stand against them, the U.S. still has about 10,000 puppy mills. Together, we can take a stand against puppy mills and make them a thing of the past.
What are the symptoms of a cat with allergies?
Then Lori welcomes back Dr. Doug Kunz to cover many aspects of allergies in cats. Allergies in cats are not as common as in dogs, but they bring similar challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Kunz is Medical Director at VCA Desert Animal Hospital in Palm Springs, California.
Hot animal news
In the final segment, we talk about our relationships with our pets, a dolphin super pod caught on video, a huge python on the loose in Poland, and more news stories from around the globe.
Paul Rodgers, animal advocate
Peter then welcomes rock superstar Paul Rodgers and his wife, fitness guru and former Miss Canada, Cynthia Kereluk to talk about their deep advocacy for animals.
In this interview, they share what inspires their compassion toward animals and encourage people to help alleviate animal suffering.
